El picaflor rojo de Juan Fernández (sephanoides fernandensis) es una las especies de aves más pequeñas del planeta. El cual tiene su hábitat en las zonas neo tropicales Endémicas de América. A pesar de que existen más de 300 tipos de picaflor, esta particular ave se encuentra en peligro de extinción.
El picaflor rojo que habita en el Archipiélago de Juan Fernández ha sufrido desde el 2010, luego del estremecedor tsunami, el ataque de los gatos domésticos y salvajes. Ya que estos fueron llevados a la zona para contrarrestar la proliferación de roedores en la isla.
Es por ello, que diferentes organizaciones, tanto públicas como privadas, han decidido ayudar en el Proyecto Picaflor rojo de Juan Fernández. Y hoy, Facetas la Revista, ha querido compartir esta maravillosa aventura ambientalista.
Archipiélago Juan Fernández.
El Archipiélago chileno Juan Fernández, se encuentra ubicado a 700 kilómetros de las costas de Chile. En el Océano Pacifico Sur. Está constituido por dos principales islas, que son Robinson Crusoe y Alexander Selkirk, así como un islote llamado Santa Clara. Además, de la única localidad habitada de San Juan Bautista.
Este Archipiélago es muy famoso, debido a la Isla de Robinson Crusoe, que cuenta la historia de un escoces que fue aislado allí en el siglo XVIII. Esto inspiró la novela de Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) que lleva ese mismo nombre.
El ecosistema del Archipiélago Juan Fernández, es considerado por la UNESCO desde 1977 una Reserva de Biosfera. Con aproximadamente una concentración de 43% de aves endémicas de Chile, donde el picaflor rojo solo llega a una población de 400 aves, según datos del Ministerio del Medio Ambiente.
El picaflor Rojo del Archipiélago Juan Fernández, ha sufrido un fuerte ataque, como consecuencia del tsunami sufrido en el año 2010. Al prestarse la ayuda desde la parte continental de Chile a los pobladores de la Isla, a través de la vía marítima, también llegaron los roedores. Entonces, se introdujeron diversos animales domésticos, tal es el caso de los gatos, como forma de controlar la proliferación de ratas en San Juan Bautista.
Estos gatos son una de las peores amenazas para el picaflor rojo de Juan Fernández. Y en efecto, se considera a esta particular ave en peligro de extinción. Otro aspecto que ha afectado al picaflor rojo, es la desaparición de su árbol Amomyrtus luma, que está siendo afectado por la presencia de especies invasoras como la zarza.
Es importante destacar, que la población de esta área, se ha caracterizado por años en cuidar el medio ambiente. Colaborando activamente con programas de preservación ambiental que se desarrollan en el Archipiélago. Así lo han demostrado, con el Proyecto Picaflor Rojo de Juan Fernández.
El Proyecto para rescatar el picaflor rojo
Este proyecto comenzó, desde el año 2012, con reuniones coordinadas. Y culminó el proceso de intervención, en el 2016.
Este gran proyecto ambientalista buscó preservar el equilibrio ecológico de todo el Archipiélago Juan Fernández. En especial, la conservación del Picaflor Rojo de Juan Fernández, en su hábitat natural. Ya que, el gato doméstico y salvaje, se había convertido en la peor amenaza para el ave Picaflor Rojo de Juan Fernández.
Se destaca, que uno de los focos principales fue la seguridad en el manejo de rodenticidas, tanto en su manipulación como en evitar afectar especies no target o a la población en general.
El programa implementó el control de plagas de manera responsable, a fin de disminuir la población de las ratas en el área. Esto logró, reducir la incorporación de los gatos a las casas, y por ende, bajar el peligro de la caza de los gatos al picaflor rojo de Juan Fernández.
Otro aspecto importante del Proyecto Picaflor rojo de Juan Fernández, han sido los programas de capacitación, en los cualesse realizaron charlas a toda la población, que participó activamente, sobre la importancia de la protección del ave picaflor rojo de Juan Fernández.
Así como, la responsabilidad que deben tener los dueños de las mascotas (los gatos) de mantenerlos alejados de los nidos de las aves. Por otro lado, aceptar que los gatos domésticos ya no son indispensables para eliminar las ratas, sino que, se puede realizar a través del control fitosanitario de manera responsable con la ayuda de las empresas colaboradoras del proyecto.
